Joburg Super Kings have appointed ex-South Africa cricketer Albie Morkel as their new head coach for the fifth edition of SA20. He takes over from Stephen Fleming, who had previously held the post for the first four editions.

This has obviously caused another upheaval in the Super Kings fraternity following the departure of Fleming. He has now been appointed as the test team coach of England, once again a crucial role for the experienced coach.

Morkel had already held a coaching position with the team since the beginning of the inaugural season of SA20. And now he has the opportunity to coach the team as head coach.

Albie Morkel is also familiar with the Super Kings franchise. Albie has played for six seasons for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.

Recognised for his heavy hitting and solid medium pace, Morkel was one of the key foreign players for CSK. Having shared the dressing room alongside Stephen Fleming, this was the next chapter in an ongoing relationship with the Super Kings camp.

The franchise felt that his appreciation of its culture and values made him the right fit to be a successor.

Super Kings owner Rupa Gurunath said:

"Albie Morkel has been an invaluable member of our coaching group over the years. He understands what the Super Kings stand for, has built strong relationships with our players and staff, and has played an important role behind the scenes in player development. We are excited to see him take on this new role and lead the team into the next chapter."

Director of Joburg Super Kings, KS Viswanathan, supported the decision.

"Albie Morkel understands our culture well, having experienced it both as a player and as a coach. His leadership and understanding of the South African cricket landscape give us great confidence as we move forward."

Joburg Super Kings came fourth in the last edition of SA20 before being eliminated from the competition in the Eliminator. With four seasons led by Fleming, this franchise will now pray that a new way under Morkel will enable this team to make a claim for the title.

Morkel, who was speaking after his appointment, described the appointment as a great moment in his life in the game of cricket.

"It is an incredible honour to be appointed Head Coach of the Joburg Super Kings. From wearing the Super Kings jersey as a player to now leading one of its franchises as Head Coach, this journey is truly special. I look forward to building on the strong foundations we've created together and helping this group achieve its full potential."

Furthermore, Morkel's promotion indicates the Super Kings group is prepared to appoint separate head coaches for its various franchises rather than expect one coach to handle several teams.

In contrast to Joburg Super Kings, who have confirmed the appointment of Fleming's successor, Chennai Super Kings are yet to reveal the appointment of a new head coach. The decision will be monitored with great interest as one of the most successful teams in IPL history moves forward following Fleming's lengthy period at the helm.
