This Friday, Shillong's football narrative unfolds into two distinct aspirations. One is a club eager to fulfill its long-held ambitions, while the other is a newcomer stepping onto India's historic football stage. When Shillong Lajong FC faces Nongkseh Sports & Social Cultural Club (SSCC) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, it will not only kick off Group E of the 135th Durand Cup but also mark a significant moment in Meghalaya's football journey.

For the third consecutive year, Shillong hosts the Durand Cup, and for the first time, three local clubs are competing in Asia's oldest football tournament. The campaign begins with a local derby, showcasing the region's most established professional club against its newest contender. One dream is rooted in tradition and the quest for the elusive Durand Cup title, while the other is driven by the thrill of debuting on this grand stage.

Lajong's Quest for Glory

Shillong Lajong is a name synonymous with football excellence in the state. The club has nurtured countless players who have gone on to represent various teams across India and the national squad. After reaching the semi-finals in the last two editions of the Durand Cup, Lajong returns with a mission. Head coach Birendra Thapa, who led the team during their memorable runs, acknowledges the heightened expectations this time around. "Every tournament is about winning, not just pleasing fans. We aim to reach the final and claim the championship," he stated. Despite their experience, Thapa anticipates a challenging match against a formidable opponent. "They have signed several talented players from Shillong, making it a tough contest, but we are ready to give our all."

Nongkseh's Momentous Entry

In the opposing dressing room, Nongkseh SSCC exudes confidence as they prepare for a historic day. Fresh off their victory in the Meghalaya State League, the club is set to make its national debut. Although the badge is new to the Durand Cup, several players, including captain Hardy Cliff Nongbri, have prior experience in the tournament. Ironically, Nongbri returns to face his former team, having captained Lajong to the semi-finals in a previous edition. "Shillong Lajong is a strong team, and I know them well. But once the match starts, nostalgia will fade," he remarked. With a blend of seasoned and young players, Nongkseh is determined to make their mark. Head coach Joseph Naik expressed gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing their hard work and readiness to compete against a respected opponent.

A Respectful Rivalry

What sets this match apart is the mutual respect between the two teams. Many players share friendships, having played together or against each other since their school days. Shillong Lajong captain Kenstar Kharshong anticipates a match that reflects the spirit of Meghalaya football. "They have experienced players, and I expect a great contest. I hope the fans come out to enjoy it," he said.

While players prepare for the spectacle, numerous individuals have been working tirelessly behind the scenes. At the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, final preparations continue long after training sessions. Uttam Kalita, the pitch curator, has been responsible for maintaining the field for all three Durand Cup editions in Shillong. "Every tournament brings new excitement. We strive to make the ground look its best," he shared. Even he refrains from predicting a winner, acknowledging the strengths of both teams.

Nearby, Nicholas from the State Sports Council observes the preparations with satisfaction. "It's great to host tournaments like this, as this stadium is designed for international matches," he noted, expressing hope that a local team reaches the final.

Beyond Just a Game

Outside the stadium, fans have already chosen their sides. Some support Shillong Lajong's experience, while others believe Nongkseh can create history. Young supporter Vebanshar Kharkongor, who has attended many Durand Cup matches in Shillong, feels the tournament has evolved beyond football. "It connects families and friends here," he said, although his loyalty lies with Lajong. Another young girl at the Shillong Sports Association ground declined an interview, fearing that speaking before the match might jinx her team. This sentiment encapsulates the passion for football in Shillong, where the match represents more than just points in a group; it symbolizes a club's legacy and another's emergence. As the teams prepare to clash, both dreams will share the spotlight, with one pursuing history and the other beginning its journey.
