Train Luggage Rule: If you travel by train and carry a lot of luggage, there is good news for you. Indian Railways has introduced a new rule for the convenience of passengers. Passengers with confirmed train tickets can now book the personal luggage they wish to carry in the coach online. This means that instead of standing in queues at the station, the task can be completed online in moments. But do you know how much luggage you can carry without incurring extra charges? Let’s find out the luggage allowance for different coach classes...

Online luggage booking starts from July 31, 2026
This new railway facility came into effect on July 31, 2026. The Railway Board had issued instructions to all zonal railways on July 20, 2026, to implement this system. This facility is available only to passengers holding confirmed reservation tickets who intend to travel with their luggage in the reserved coach.

What has changed under the new rule?
Passengers will no longer need to go through a separate, lengthy process at the station to book the personal luggage they are carrying. If the luggage falls within the limits prescribed by the Railways, it can be booked online. The objective is to simplify luggage booking and make the entire process more convenient.

Which passengers can avail of this facility?
This facility is available only to passengers holding confirmed train tickets. It will not be available to passengers traveling on waitlisted or RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) tickets.

How much luggage can be carried for free?
The Railways has not changed the pre-existing free luggage allowance limits for different classes.

Passengers traveling in First AC can carry up to 70 kg of luggage for free.
For passengers in First Class and Second AC (2AC), the limit is 50 kg. Passengers traveling in 3AC, AC Chair Car (CC), and Sleeper Class can carry up to 40 kg of luggage for free.
Meanwhile, the free luggage allowance for Second Class passengers is set at 35 kg.

What happens if the luggage exceeds the prescribed limit?
If a passenger wishes to travel with luggage exceeding the free allowance, the excess luggage can be booked in accordance with railway rules. Passengers will be required to pay a fee equal to 1.5 times the applicable luggage rate. Once booked, the excess luggage can be carried along in the reserved coach. If you are planning a trip or a visit home by train this week, be sure to check the weight of your suitcases and bags.

What information will be provided during online booking?
The Railways has stated that passengers will be shown relevant information while booking luggage online. This will include details regarding the free luggage allowance for their class, the maximum weight limit, items prohibited as luggage, and the fees or penalties applicable if the luggage exceeds the prescribed limit.

The objective of this new facility is to simplify the luggage booking process for passengers. Passengers with confirmed tickets will now be able to book their luggage online prior to their journey. This will save time at the station and make travel preparations easier.
