Commonwealth Games 2026: India added another medal to its tally as Punjab's Lovepreet Singh delivered an impressive performance to win the silver medal in the men's 110kg weightlifting event. The weightlifter from Amritsar lifted a total of 388kg, narrowly missing the gold medal by just one kg.

His achievement has sparked celebrations at his native village, where family members and residents came together to mark the proud moment.

Village celebrates historic achievement

Joy spread across Bal Schandar, a border village in Amritsar district, soon after Lovepreet secured the silver medal. Family members, relatives and villagers celebrated with sweets and traditional dhol beats, expressing pride in his international success. The victory has brought recognition not only to his family but also to the entire village.

Apart from being an accomplished weightlifter, Lovepreet Singh also serves the country as a jawan in the Indian Navy. Village Sarpanch Jugraj Singh said Lovepreet's achievement has made his family, village and the entire nation proud. He added that the medal is the result of nearly 10 to 12 years of dedicated training and hard work, making it an inspiration for young athletes.

Lovepreet's father, Kirpal Singh, recalled that before leaving for the Games, his son had promised to return home with a medal.

"He kept his word," the proud father said.

His mother Sukhwinder Kaur credited the success to Waheguru's blessings and her son's unwavering commitment to the sport. She expressed hope that Lovepreet would continue his journey and one day win an Olympic medal for India.

Sarpanch Jugraj Singh described Lovepreet's success as an example for youngsters across Punjab. He said the medal proves that even a sportsperson from a modest family can reach the international stage through discipline, determination and years of hard work.

Lovepreet lifted 176kg in the snatch and 212kg in the clean and jerk, taking his combined total to 388kg. New Zealand's David Andrew Liti claimed the gold medal with a total lift of 389kg, finishing just 1kg ahead of the Indian lifter. England's Andrew Griffith secured the bronze medal in the event.

Lovepreet Singh comes from a simple family. His father works as a tailor, while his grandfather supported the family by selling vegetables. Despite limited resources, Lovepreet remained focused on his dream and has now earned a place among India's medal winners at the Commonwealth Games.
