On Friday, Chief Minister of Goa, Pramod Sawant, articulated that the phrase 'Development and Heritage' transcends mere rhetoric, embodying India's developmental philosophy. He emphasized that heritage and development are not adversaries in nation-building but rather partners that complement each other.
Speaking at the 'National Conference on Goa Architecture and Sustainability', he expressed Goa's ambition to serve as a 'vibrant laboratory' for Indian architecture, where modern and traditional elements harmoniously coexist. The event was also attended by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, along with BJP Rajya Sabha member, Sadanand Shet Tanavade.
Architects as Environmental Leaders
Sawant urged architects to take on the role of environmental leaders in the battle against climate change. He remarked, 'Climate change has fundamentally altered the role of architecture. Every decision related to design now directly impacts energy consumption, carbon emissions, and environmental resilience.'
He noted that architects today are not merely designers but also environmental stewards. The Chief Minister pointed out that Goa's coastline, biodiversity, and sensitive ecosystems necessitate architecture that is thoughtful, robust, and environmentally responsible. He added that discussions around green buildings, climate-friendly materials, and sustainable construction have evolved from academic topics to policy priorities. Highlighting Goa's architectural heritage, he stated that the state possesses centuries of accumulated knowledge regarding the use of climate-friendly building materials.
