A 23-year-old man from China has a rare disease that has become a topic of discussion worldwide. The disease caused the skin on his head to thicken abnormally and develop deep wrinkles, resembling the shape of a human brain. After prolonged attempts at treatment, doctors finally gave the young man a new lease on life through complex surgery.

The problem began in his teens.

23-year-old Li, a resident of Hunan Province, first realized that his scalp was abnormally thick at around 14 years old. Initially, a slight thickening was observed in one area of ​​his head, but over time, the skin thickened. Gradually, deep wrinkles began to form across his entire head, completely changing its shape.

The condition worsened, leading to his head appearing as hard as stone and resembling the surface of a human brain. This caused people to look at him strangely, which affected his self-confidence and caused him to reduce his social interactions.

Several hospitals refused surgery

11 months of preparation, followed by major surgery

Finally, Li was treated by plastic surgeon Dr. Zhou Wei and his team at Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University. During the examination, it was discovered that he suffered from a rare condition called Cutis Verticis Gyrata (CVG).

The doctors planned a two-stage treatment. In the first stage, special tissue expanders were inserted under the scalp, gradually expanding the healthy skin. This process lasted approximately 11 months.

Following this, in the second surgery, the excess and abnormal skin was removed and the healthy skin was used to restore the scalp’s normal shape. After this complex surgery, which lasted approximately three hours, Lee’s scalp appearance returned to a largely normal state, and over time, hair began to grow back on his head.

Cutis Verticis Gyrata (CVG) is a very rare scalp condition. It causes the scalp skin to become abnormally thick and develop deep folds. In some cases, these folds are so pronounced that the scalp’s surface resembles a human brain.

This condition usually occurs during adolescence or young adulthood, and cases are more common in men than in women.

This disease affects only a few people in a million.

According to medical experts, CVG is an extremely rare disease, occurring in only a few patients per 100,000. This is why most doctors see very few cases in their entire careers.

The exact cause of this disease is still unclear. However, in some cases, it is believed to be linked to genetic factors, hormonal changes, or other skin conditions.

Experts say that CVG is not fatal for every patient, but if the thickening of the skin begins to affect a person’s normal life, treatment becomes necessary.
