On Friday, Devajit Saikia, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), expressed his congratulations to the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) for their efforts in organizing the Assam Premier League (APL). However, he urged the ACA to refrain from hosting the tournament in an extravagant manner due to the ongoing severe flooding in Assam.
Challenges in Postponing the Tournament
Saikia acknowledged that postponing the tournament would be challenging, as there are no available slots in the domestic cricket calendar for the next eight months. He commended the ACA for its commitment to aiding the community during difficult times, particularly noting their recent contribution of ₹50 lakh towards flood relief.
No Suitable Rescheduling Options
In a statement to the media, Saikia reiterated his congratulations to the ACA for their preparations for the APL but emphasized the need for a subdued approach given the current circumstances in Assam. He stated, "It is quite difficult to delay the tournament since all arrangements are in place, and there are no subsequent opportunities to postpone it beyond August 23."
He elaborated that the domestic cricket schedule would resume right after the tournament and continue until the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2027, leaving no chance to reschedule the event.
Assam Premier League Set to Kick Off
The Assam Premier League is set to commence on Saturday, August 1, with the opening match featuring Charaideo Sunrisers against Barpeta Braves. The inaugural season will consist of 43 matches, including 40 league games, two semi-finals, and the grand finale.
