In a remarkable achievement, Harsh Singh from India secured a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, marking him as the first male judoka from the nation to accomplish this feat. He triumphed over Australia's seasoned Joshua Katz in the men's -60kg final on Friday.

At just 23 years old, Harsh showcased exceptional skill in his debut Commonwealth Games, delivering a strategic and composed performance against the Australian Olympian, who was favored to win.

The match was tightly contested, with neither judoka gaining a significant edge until Harsh made his move with only 41 seconds left on the clock.

He executed a brilliant waza-ari, the second-highest scoring technique in judo, to take the lead, and then defended his position fiercely for the remaining duration of the four-minute match, clinching a historic win.

This outcome was unexpected, given Katz's impressive background, which includes multiple Oceania Championships, Australian national titles, and a bronze medal from the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Despite facing a formidable opponent, Harsh maintained his composure, undeterred by the high stakes. His decisive waza-ari ultimately sealed Katz's fate, contributing to India's second judo gold of the day.

Katz hails from a prominent judo lineage, with both parents being former judokas and his father having coached Australia’s national judo team at past Olympic Games. This context amplifies the significance of Harsh's groundbreaking victory, which stands as the pinnacle of his young career.
