One migrant worker was killed and another sustained injuries after suspected militants fired at them in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, ANI quoted the police as saying.
The attack took place in the Kellam area of the Kulgam district.
Following the attack, security forces cordoned off the area and began a search operation to track down the assailants, the news agency quoted the police as saying.
The worker who was killed hailed from Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said.
Following the attack, Sinha spoke to Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat and other top security officials. “I strongly condemn this cowardly act,” the lieutenant governor said. “I have directed our security forces to step up their operations and eliminate the terrorists.”
The attack came days after a policeman was killed when militants opened fire on security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on July 22. The policeman who was killed was identified as Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi.
