Nicholas Pooran was named Meerkat Match Hero at the Kia Oval after an innings of 58 not out from 22 balls — the fastest fifty in the combined history of MI London and their predecessor franchise Oval Invincibles — which formed the centrepiece of a seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers in MI London's Hundred opener. Arriving Under Pressure
When Pooran came to the crease, MI London were 51 for 3 after 44 deliveries, chasing 144. Will Jacks and Jason Roy were both out cheaply inside the first ten balls of the innings, and James Vince had just been bowled by Nathan Ellis for 17. The match, having been held together by Sam Curran's accumulation, was still on a knife-edge. MI London needed 93 from 55 balls, and the surface had been slow throughout.
Pooran's first delivery was a full ball outside off from Ellis, driven out to deep cover for a single. His entry was unhurried and gave no indication of what was to come. At that point he had faced 1 ball and scored 1 run. By the time the over ended, MI London's situation had not yet changed dramatically — but the game was about to.
Identifying and Attacking the Slower Options
Pooran's innings was built on a clear and immediate reading of which bowlers to attack. When Benny Howell came on with his mixture of slower balls and knuckle deliveries, Pooran hit three boundaries in five balls: a four pulled off the pads to fine leg, a six over long on off a 62mph delivery he stepped into sweetly, and a four from a quicker 71mph ball angled with the angle over fine leg. He then took on Abrar Ahmed, the leg-spinner who had been the most difficult to read for the MI London batters. In successive deliveries — balls 74 and 75 of the innings — Pooran swept one high over square leg for six and slapped the next over long on for another six. Finishing the Job
Matthew Potts returned to bowl his final allocation with MI London needing 11 from 20. Curran launched a full toss for six off the first ball.
