Neeraj Chopra Won Silver In Javelin Throw CWG 2026: India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal with a season’s best throw of 85.83m at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday, July 31, 2026. The 28-year-old former Olympic champion, who returned from a lower back injury, finished second despite difficult conditions like cold and strong winds at the Scotstoun Stadium.

Neeraj produced a season-best throw of 85.83 meters to finish second in the men’s javelin throw at Glasgow. Rumesh Taranga Pathirage of Sri Lanka won the gold medal with a superb throw of 89.75 meters. Neeraj’s last attempt was a foul, but his previous throw of 85.83 meters proved enough to secure him the silver medal.

Neeraj Chopra was unable to participate in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games due to injury. Therefore, his last real performance before 2026 was at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, where he won a historic gold medal. This is Neeraj’s second Commonwealth Games medal. Despite winning the medal, he admitted that he is still not fully fit and is trying to regain his old form.

Neeraj brought glory to the country by winning a silver medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, but even after this achievement, he clearly stated that his comeback is not complete yet. Neeraj believes that he is slowly regaining his old form and still needs to work harder to reach his best.

After the competition, Neeraj said, “I can’t say that my fitness is back to normal. I’m slowly reaching that level. The Doha Diamond League was my first competition after my injury. I wasn’t fully prepared there. I felt better here, but I’m still trying to regain my rhythm. I want to improve further in upcoming competitions.”

Neeraj Chopra said that at the big stage, not only technique but also complete fitness is crucial. He said, “There was no pressure to win a gold medal. The biggest difference is when you are 100 percent fit. Then you have a different confidence to fight. But after returning from injury, every step has to be taken carefully. Even today, I was being careful with every throw.”

He also described the cold weather in Glasgow as a challenge. Neeraj said he prefers performing better in warmer weather. “It’s not easy for me to perform well in the cold. I prefer warmer weather because I have Indian blood in me,” he said with a smile.

Neeraj will not stop at silver

Neeraj also admitted that he had only one good throw in the competition, while gold medalist Rumesh Taranga Pathirage also made a superb throw to win the bout. He said, “Sometimes one good throw is enough to win. He had a great throw today, and so did I.”

Despite winning the silver medal, Neeraj isn’t content to stop there. He stated that there’s still much room for improvement in his performance and he will strive to do even better in upcoming competitions. According to him, his goal now is to continually improve himself and return to the field fully fit.
