The latest Henley Passport Index 2026 has brought significant changes to the global passport rankings. The United States has slipped to its lowest position in a decade, with more than 30 countries now ranking ahead of it in terms of travel freedom.

Despite the drop, the US passport remains one of the world's strongest. The decline is largely due to other countries expanding visa-free travel access for their citizens at a faster pace.

India improves its ranking

India has climbed to 81st place in the Henley Passport Index 2026, improving from 85th position in the previous edition.

According to the index, Indian passport holders can currently travel to 55 destinations without obtaining a visa in advance, either through visa-free entry or visa-on-arrival facilities.

Although India's ranking has improved, the number of destinations accessible without a prior visa has declined from 57 to 55. This change is attributed to revisions in visa policies by certain countries rather than any reduction in the strength of the Indian passport itself.

How the Henley Passport Index works

The Henley Passport Index is one of the most widely recognised global passport rankings. It evaluates the passports of 199 countries and territories based on access to 227 travel destinations.

The rankings are determined by the number of countries and territories that allow passport holders to enter without obtaining a visa beforehand or by offering a visa on arrival.

The index measures travel freedom and does not assess a country's economic performance, political influence, or military strength.

Why the US ranking declined

The report explains that several countries have strengthened diplomatic ties and signed new visa agreements in recent years, allowing their citizens to travel to more destinations without prior visas.

As a result, many nations have overtaken the United States in the rankings. In comparison with previous years, American travellers now require visas or additional travel authorisations for a greater number of destinations, affecting the country's overall position.

World's most powerful passports in 2026

According to the latest rankings:

• Singapore holds the world's most powerful passport.

• Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) share the second position.

• Sweden ranks third.
