Cost of Studying in Delhi: Securing admission to major colleges like DU in the national capital, Delhi, is a dream for lakhs of students. Every year, a large number of students arrive in Delhi from other states and cities for their education; however, the cost of studying in the capital is not limited to college fees alone. Expenses such as hostel or PG (Paying Guest) rent, food, local transport, groceries, books, and other daily necessities significantly inflate the annual budget. Consequently, the total expenditure for out-of-town students is several times higher than that of local students living with their families. Reports indicate that while an out-of-town student’s annual expenditure reaches about ₹3 lakh, a student living with their family spends around ₹70,000. In other words, a student from outside Delhi has to spend nearly four times as much as a local student.

Where do out-of-town students incur the highest expenses?

According to reports, accommodation is the biggest expense for students coming from outside Delhi. Rent for a PG or a rented room amounts to approximately ₹1.2 lakh annually. Additionally, expenses include about ₹18,000 for transport, ₹50,000–₹60,000 for food and daily necessities, around ₹24,000 for other miscellaneous daily expenses, approximately ₹60,000 for college fees, and up to ₹4,000 for books and stationery. Thus, apart from tuition fees, the cost of accommodation and daily needs constitutes a major portion of the total budget.

Significantly lower expenses for local students

On the other hand, the expenditure pattern differs for students living with their families in Delhi. Students living with their families do not have to bear the cost of PG or rented accommodation. Their primary expenses are limited to college fees, commuting fares, books, and stationery. According to estimates, the total annual expenditure for a student living with their family is around ₹70,000—significantly lower than that of students coming from outside the city.

Living Expenses: The Major Factor

In the capital, Delhi, college fees are roughly the same for both out-of-town students and locals. However, for students arriving from outside, costs related to accommodation, food, and daily living significantly inflate the total budget. Consequently, the actual cost of studying in Delhi is not determined solely by college fees; living arrangements and lifestyle choices play a major role as well.

Where Do the Highest Expenses Occur?

For students from outside Delhi, a large portion of the total expenditure goes towards PG accommodation or rented housing, food and groceries, local transport, utilities (electricity, internet), other daily expenses, college fees, and books/stationery. In contrast, the expenses of students living with their families are primarily limited to college fees, local transport, and books.

Actual Costs Can Be Even Higher

This estimate is based solely on standard academic and living expenses. It does not account for costs such as coaching, competitive exam preparation, laptop purchases, security deposits, relocation, medical expenses, or other one-time outlays. As a result, the actual annual budget for many students could be considerably higher. Furthermore, these costs can vary depending on the specific college, course, locality, type of accommodation, and individual spending habits.
