Walk into the gallery in a Sarvodaya Enclave home, and you enter the final chapter of sculptor Latika Katt 's artistic journey. The exhibition at Gallery Threshold brings together Abandoned, the last series she created before her passing in January last year.


A suspended metallic work greets visitors at the entrance, while 13 bronze-and-stone sculptures from the series occupy the floor. On the walls are delicate graphite drawings that reveal the artist's quieter, meditative side. "The idea was to represent her in totality. You see the softness of her graphite drawings and then the strength of the materials she worked with. Both sides of her personality are present here," said curator Tunty Chauhan, who decided on doing an exhibition of the sculptor's works about two years ago.




'Her works had architectural sensibility'
A six-minute short film by filmmaker Muzaffar Ali, screened at the preview, featured Katt and her lifelong inspiration, Varanasi, where she was born. Remembering Katt, he said, "She was intensely passionate about her work. When I saw her sculpture based on the ghats of Varanasi, I felt they were designed to receive light in different ways. Her works weren't just sculptural; they had an architectural sensibility. I wanted to film more of her while she was making sculptures, woh reh gaya."


Aman Nath, a close friend of Katt and who attended the preview, recalled that the two had planned a sculpture garden at one of his heritage properties. "We had decided to call it Latika Bagh, but she passed away before it could happen," he said.
