Rule Change: Starting August 1, 2026, several major changes will impact your pocket and daily expenses. Changes to rules related to ITR filing, credit card rewards, bank charges, railway Tatkal tickets, and home loans could impact your financial planning. Learn the full details of these 5 major changes in August.
Many important rules and deadlines related to the financial affairs of both individuals and businesses are changing starting August 1, 2026. From tax compliance, banking charges, home loan EMIs to Indian Railways' Tatkal ticket bookings and credit card rewards, these five major financial changes in August will directly impact your wallet and monthly budget.
1. ITR filing deadline is August 31 (for businesses and professionals)
August 31, 2026, is the next important deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for self-employed professionals, freelancers, small businesses, and taxpayers opting for the presumptive tax scheme under Sections 44AD and 44ADA who do not require a tax audit (ITR-3 or ITR-4 filers). Eligible taxpayers who fail to file their returns by this August 31 deadline will be subject to a late-filing fee of up to ₹5,000 under Section 234F. Interest will also be payable on the outstanding tax liability as per the provisions of Section 234A. Timely filing is essential to ensure timely compliance and avoid additional penalties.
2- All eyes will be on the RBI MPC meeting.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is holding a crucial meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) between August 3 and August 5. The decisions of this policy meeting will be announced on August 5, 2026. While this announcement does not immediately implement any regulatory changes, the RBI's decision on key policy rates and liquidity outlook could directly impact home loan EMIs, bank interest rates, and fixed deposit (FD) returns in the coming months.
3- Indian Railways: Changes in Tatkal ticket booking process
Indian Railways has implemented a token-based system for Tatkal ticket booking from August 1 to control the huge crowd at the reservation counters and make the booking process more transparent and streamlined.
4- Reduction in Axis Bank credit card rewards and terms
Axis Bank is reducing the features and benefits of its premium credit card, Magnus for Burgundy, effective August 28, 2026. The bank has increased the dynamic currency conversion markup from 1.5 percent to 2 percent. Reward points earned on toll-related transactions and gift card purchases have been completely eliminated. The process for domestic airport lounge access through Priority Pass has also been revised.

Customers of other banks should also check their banks' annual maintenance charges, transaction fees, or other service charges to avoid any unexpected additional charges.
