Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen returned to Kolkata after 19 years on Friday afternoon and received a warm traditional welcome at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport . Dressed in a classic red-and-white sari, the celebrated writer was greeted with a ceremonial shawl, flower bouquets, a shower of flower petals and the blowing of conches, as admirers gathered to welcome her despite tight security arrangements. Following the grand reception, a visibly moved Taslima said she was happy to be back in Kolkata, which has always remained close to her heart. She also waved to everyone present.

Nasreen’s visit marks her first appearance in the city after 2007, when she had to move out following violent protests over her controversial memoir Dwikhondito. Having fled Bangladesh years earlier, she had long called Kolkata her home before relocating to Delhi.
According to reports, today, the writer will attend a programme at Rabindra Sadan focusing on the fight against religious fundamentalism .
