Plini's first show in Kolkata: A night of progressive rock

There are gigs, and then there are the ones you don’t just attend, you feel them. Plini’s first-ever Kolkata show at Hashtag Kolkata was unmistakably the latter: a room full of listeners, not spectators, gathering in anticipation before the first shimmering chord broke it wide open. This was never a mainstream crowd, and everyone seemed to know it, fans who had waited years for this moment, carrying his music with them long before he arrived. The self-taught Sydney guitarist, once hailed by Steve Vai as “the future of exceptional guitar playing,” had toured India before, but Kolkata had always been missing, until now. Part of his four-city return and a new album era, the night felt less like a tour stop and more like something long overdue finally finding its place.



"It's overdue" - Kolkata's musicians speak

The pull ran through the city's own music circles like a current. Tabla exponent Subhen Chatterjee called Plini "one of the most important bands right now doing progressive rock , but in a different way," adding: "It's wonderful to see so many people here supporting this kind of music in Kolkata , it's overdue." Gaurab Gaboo Chatterjee , who'd followed Plini's music for years, said simply: "The fact that he's here in Kolkata, performing right now, is really exciting."
