Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage delivered the greatest performance of his career when claiming Commonwealth Games men's javelin throw gold for his country in 2026. Facing such rivals as India's two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympic and 2022 Commonwealth Games champion Arshad Nadeem and the current world champion Keshorn Walcott, the 23-year-old secured victory with a best throw of 89.75 metres.
The win demonstrated how Pathirage had cemented his position as one of the world's best javelin stars. It also gave him yet another milestone in what has already been a tremendous 2026 season.
From Fast Bowling Dreams To Javelin Success
Pathirage's route into athletics is a strange one. He did not initially set out to become an athlete, but grew up loving cricket, first dreaming of becoming a quick bowler. As a teenager, he could regularly nigh in the mid-130 kmph range btpw, and appeared destined for a cricketing career.
He was so good at his sport that things took a different turn when coach Tony Prasanna felt he should try the javelin throw. That had a completely new impact on his career.

It was coach Tony who made me take up the javelin, said Pathirage to The Indian Express.
"He's always telling me that practice makes perfect, and if I do the basics correctly, I will get here. 'He's more than a coach; he doesn't just teach me cricket, he teaches about life.'
With the assistance of Prasanna, Pathirage was able to turn himself into one of the most impressive talents of world athletics.

A Breakthrough Year For The Sri Lankan Star
In fact, Pathirage had already made a name for himself before his Commonwealth victory. In June, he was the first athlete to break the 90-meter barrier this season when he registered a huge 92.62 meters at the Rome Diamond League.
The performance announced his arrival among the world's best javelin throwers and made him one of the medal contenders for the Commonwealth Games.
Finally, he encountered his most difficult task. Neeraj Chopra, Arshad Nadeem and Keshorn Walcott all exhibited good form and maintained laudable international records. However, in the final, Pathirage stayed cool and hit the leading shot of the competition, earning the gold medal.
The victory is another proud occasion for Sri Lanka and shows what Pathirage has now become known for in the men's javelin. With his recent performances and his mood, the talented young man aspires to take on the world in the years to come.
