DU 1-Year PG Course: There is big news for students aspiring to pursue a postgraduate (PG) degree from Delhi University. The university has announced an increase in the number of seats for its newly introduced one-year postgraduate programs—a move long demanded by both students and faculty. This decision follows recommendations from a special committee constituted by the university. It brings relief to students wishing to pursue a one-year Master's degree after completing the four-year undergraduate program (FYUP).

Delhi University has significantly increased the seat intake for popular courses such as MA, MSc, and MCom. However, while students appear delighted with this decision, university professors have expressed concern. Teachers believe that abruptly increasing seats without adequate preparation or infrastructure expansion could compromise the quality of education. Additionally, it could lead to a shortage of space in laboratories and classrooms.

How many seats were added across subjects at Delhi University?
The university administration has more than doubled the number of seats in several major departments. Courses such as MA English, History, Philosophy, and Political Science, as well as MSc Mathematics and MCom, previously had only 45 seats; this figure has now been raised to 126—an increase of 81 seats. Furthermore, seats for MA Economics have been increased from 40 to 126. Intake for Psychology and Chemistry has risen from 45 to 63, while MSc Statistics will now offer 54 seats instead of 29.

Students Demand Further Increase in Seats

Students who have completed the four-year undergraduate program (FYUP) have welcomed this decision. Applicants for the MA History program state that the increased seat count has boosted their chances of admission and alleviated some of the stress associated with competition. However, some students believe that given the number of colleges under DU, the seat count should have been closer to 200, considering the large number of candidates who have completed the FYUP (Four-Year Undergraduate Programme).

Professors Express Concern: A ‘Hasty Decision’

Delhi University teachers have termed this move an ill-conceived decision. According to media reports, professors from several affiliated colleges state that the university lacks the necessary infrastructure to handle the increased student volume. A sudden increase in seats will adversely affect the student-teacher ratio.

Strain on Classrooms and Labs

Teachers believe that this hasty decision will leave science students without access to laboratories for practicals, while classrooms in the Arts faculty will prove inadequate. This will compromise the students' learning experience. The university should have estimated how many students would actually opt for the one-year PG course, as not every FYUP student enrolls in it.

Until the 2025-26 session, DU offered only two-year master's programs. Under the New Education Policy (NEP), the one-year PG program is being introduced starting this academic session.
