Mykhailo Mudryk, Chelsea's unpredictable winger, has been cleared to return to the club after the doping case against him was resolved. The Ukraine forward was given a four-year ban by the FA in June 2025, but after taking his appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, he has now had that suspension brought to an early end. He is set to link up with the club's pre-season camp as Chelsea begin their rebuild under Xabi Alonso.

Case resolved

Mudryk has not featured since November 2024, when he returned a positive test for a concentration of meldonium, a substance that boosts respiratory capacity. Six months later, the FA imposed the maximum four-year suspension on him, which would have kept the Ukrainian out of action until December 2028.

However, he later challenged that ruling, stating that he had 'never knowingly used any banned substances or broken any rules.' Appeals of this nature are not made public, but the FA confirmed on Friday that he had accepted he breached anti-doping regulations and was therefore free to resume playing.

Mudryk's statement

The player spoke of his happiness after the early lifting of his ban:

“After a long battle, the four-year ban that was imposed on me has been rescinded, and I am free to resume my career with immediate effect. I am grateful that this process has reached a conclusion, that I have been cleared to return to football and that I can now look ahead to my future.

“This has been the most difficult period of my career. As I have always maintained from the outset of this case, I have never knowingly or intentionally taken any banned substance. My commitment to competing fairly and representing my club and country with professionalism and integrity has always been important to me. I would like to thank my family and friends for their support and belief throughout this period.”

Mudryk has been training on his own after being barred from attending Chelsea's training ground and refused access to team facilities.

Chelsea voice their support

Chelsea, for their part, have consistently backed the player in public. The club handed him a remarkable nine-year contract in 2022. In a short statement released on Friday afternoon, they said they were “pleased that the matter has now reached a conclusion which allows him to return to football with immediate effect.”

Mudryk will now join Chelsea's pre-season tour of Australia and Asia.

A comeback season?

This could turn into a fascinating campaign for Mudryk as he returns to the setup. Xabi Alonso already has an oversized squad to manage, but after sanctioning the departure of the often-criticised Alejandro Garnacho to Aston Villa, there appears to be room for him. Estevao's recurring hamstring problems may also need close monitoring as the Blues try to bounce back from a difficult season.
