Glasgow: Sharmila Dhankhar won India’s first para athletics gold medal at the Commonwealth Games on Monday in the women’s shot put F57 event. Forty-year-old Sharmila won the gold with a season’s best throw of 9.81 metres, ending India’s 20-year wait for a para athletics medal at the Commonwealth Games. Another Indian athlete, Shilpa Shayla, was awarded the bronze medal in the same event after a controversy. Shilpa had thrown a personal best of 7.26 metres.
Nigeria’s Eucheria Iyiaji was initially in the bronze medal position, but after an objection from the Indian team and an official review, her only valid attempt was ruled a foul. Consequently, fourth-placed Shilpa Shayla was awarded the bronze medal.
Nigeria, however, is likely to object to the decision. An emotional Shilpa celebrated with Sharmila after the medal change was announced. India thus secured two medals in the event. The F57 category is for athletes with lower limb disabilities, limb loss, or reduced muscle tone.
