In Germany, many people still do not like being reminded of the man who escaped punishment for a handball inside the penalty area in the quarter-final of the home Euros two years ago. The spot-kick that should have been awarded was not given, and Germany were eliminated.

In the past few days and weeks, however, Marc Cucurella has been making headlines for all the right reasons, and not only because of his outstanding displays for world champions Spain at the World Cup.

Now, the 28-year-old has produced another gesture that is impossible not to appreciate.

Before linking up with his new club Real, he shared the joy of his World Cup success with someone he likely came to know, quite literally, across the garden fence during his years at Chelsea.

According to a report in The Sun, Cucurella spoke with his postman Gary about the final victory and even allowed him to hold the winners’ medal.

As per the report, the postman later shared pictures of the meeting online and wrote: “Had the pleasure today of chatting with local world champion Marc Cucurella while delivering the mail.”

He also said Cucurella was a friendly, grounded person and added that he was especially thrilled by the chance to hold the winners’ medal: “I think I’m the first Englishman in 60 years to hold a World Cup winner’s medal.”

He also shared a photograph of himself wearing the medal around his neck, along with a selfie featuring the two of them.

Fans were full of praise for the Spain international over the gesture. And little by little, it may be worth asking whether even Germany supporters might finally be ready to forgive him for what happened in that quarter-final two years ago.
