New Delhi: Actor Ram Kapoor has shared one of the most personal revelations of his life on Lock Upp, disclosing that doctors once warned he had only six months to live because of his deteriorating health. The actor also revealed that he kept the struggle hidden from everyone, including his wife, Gautami Kapoor, and their children.
Speaking on the reality show, Ram said his health reached a critical stage while he was shooting for Bade Achhe Lagte Hain. Although the show’s success made him one of television’s biggest stars, he admitted that the same period marked the lowest point of his personal life.
Ram revealed that he was battling severe depression as his weight continued to increase. Despite repeated medical warnings, he chose to ignore his condition because his career was flourishing and he was receiving immense love from audiences.
Recalling what doctors told him, the actor said they warned that he had become dangerously unhealthy and could die within six months. He shared that he was taking insulin three times a day, his blood sugar levels had shot up to between 400 and 600, and he was working nearly 14 hours daily.
“I didn’t want to do anything about it because I was getting so much love and making so much money,” Ram admitted, adding that he eventually realised he had become “a very ugly person” during that phase.
Ram Kapoor admitted that his worsening health didn’t just affect his body, it also changed the way he behaved on and off the sets. Recalling that difficult phase, the actor said, “I would show up six hours late for shoots, drink alcohol on set and speak to people very rudely. I became a monster. Finally, the show ended because of me. I had become such a human being that I am ashamed of myself.”
The actor credited his children for changing his outlook on life. Ram said becoming a father gave him a reason to fight back, explaining that he could not give up because his children depended on him. He added that this was the first time his family, including his wife, would learn about the depth of his depression.
Earlier on Lock Upp, Ram had also revealed that he helped his father plan his death after the latter decided against undergoing treatment when pancreatic cancer returned.
Meanwhile, the latest episode also revisits the confrontation between Ram Kapoor and Pamala Serena. Jailers Farah Khan and Riteish Deshmukh questioned Pamala over the narrative she created after the argument, with Riteish saying that although Ram’s behaviour was aggressive, he never intended to physically harm her.
Lock Upp: Sach Ya Sazaa streams on Netflix from Saturday to Friday at 8 pm.
