Arsenal have reached an £80 million agreement to sign Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, according to The Times.

The Newcastle star has been one of the leading targets for the Emirates Stadium side and manager Mikel Arteta.

He is now expected to undergo his medical on Monday at London Colney before completing his move to the Gunners.

The Brazil international has agreed a five-year contract with the North London club, and his signing could be officially confirmed next week.

Guimaraes will join the Gunners for an initial fee of £70m, while Newcastle are in line to receive another £10m in add-ons later on.

His expected arrival will lead to Christian Norgaard leaving after Everton agreed a deal in principle with Arsenal for the midfielder, worth around £7m.

The North London club were prepared to do everything possible to land Guimaraes, and it now appears they have finally secured their man.

He is expected to improve their prospects on the pitch because of his attacking quality from central midfield.

The Gunners are aiming to win successive Premier League titles for the first time in their history next season, and bringing the Newcastle midfielder into the squad is a major lift.

They have also added to their squad depth with the signings of French goalkeeper Illan Meslier and Greek winger Christos Tzolis.

Further arrivals could still follow as Arsenal look to give themselves a stronger chance of winning the quadruple next season.
