RBI new deposit rules 2026: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) amended the rules to deposits in a notice issued on Friday, July 30. These new rules will come into effect on October 1. Significantly, these rules apply to commercial banks, small finance banks, regional rural banks (RRBs), local area banks, payment banks, and urban cooperative banks.
It is worth noting that these changes are not expected to bring any immediate or major changes in retail term deposits, although they will increase transparency for customers and provide banks with more flexibility in bulk deposits.
Here are the details of the revised RBI rules and all the important things to depositors and banks:
Transparency in interest rates
Interest rates on deposits (including bulk deposits) will be as per the rate schedule published on the Bank’s website. However, in case of bulk deposits, interest rates will be displayed on the Bank’s website at 10:00 am every working day, including a grace period of 10 minutes, i.e., these rates will be published by 10:10 am.
Uniformity in interest rates
The interest rates on all types of deposits (including bulk deposits) will be uniform across all branches and across all customers. There will be no discrimination in the payment of interest on deposits of the same amount accepted on the same date at any office of the Bank.
Different interest rate schemes
Banks will be allowed to offer different interest rates on bulk deposits, taking into account the rates applicable to deposits or unsecured wholesale funding under the Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR) framework specified in the Reserve Bank of India (Commercial Banks – Asset Liability Management) Directions, 2025.
Will FD interest rates change?
The RBI’s revised rules do not specify any significant increase or decrease in fixed deposit (FD) interest rates, effective October 1. Banks will determine deposit rates based on key factors such as liquidity (cash availability), funding costs, and market conditions.
