Glasgow, Scotland, August 3: The 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded after 11 days of thrilling competition, culminating in a spectacular closing ceremony where Scotland officially transferred the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India. This marks the beginning of preparations for the landmark centenary edition in 2030.

Scheduled to take place in Ahmedabad, the 2030 Commonwealth Games will make India the second country, following Australia, to host this prestigious multi-sport event more than once, having previously hosted it in New Delhi in 2010.

During the handover ceremony, the Commonwealth Games flag and baton were presented to notable Indian representatives, including Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha, and Gujarat's Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

The closing ceremony commenced with a vibrant display of Scotland's cultural heritage, seamlessly transitioning into a colorful representation of India's diverse traditions and rich history.

A standout moment of the event was a unique cultural collaboration between India and Scotland, featuring musicians and dancers from both nations in a lively 'jugalbandi' that symbolized the baton’s journey from Glasgow to Ahmedabad.

On the sporting front, India celebrated a successful campaign, finishing fourth in the medal standings with a total of 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze. This achievement, while lower than the 61 medals secured in Birmingham in 2022, is notable considering that many of those medals came from sports not included in the Glasgow program.

Despite sending only 122 athletes compared to 210 in the previous Games, India maintained its fourth-place ranking and improved its medal conversion rate, with 38 athletes returning home with medals. Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh stood out as the only Indian to secure two medals.

With the ceremonial handover concluded, all eyes now turn to Ahmedabad, the host city for the centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030.
