The Congress party has intensified its investigation into police action and alleged human rights violations during the student protests in Bihar. NSUI national in-charge Kanhaiya Kumar said on Sunday that a fact-finding committee formed by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has begun its investigation in various districts of the state, including Patna. The committee is gathering evidence by speaking to students, parents, teachers, lawyers, journalists, and other stakeholders.

Kanhaiya Kumar stated that the committee’s objective is not to level political accusations against anyone, but to uncover the truth by conducting an impartial investigation of the entire incident based on facts and evidence. He explained that the committee is specifically investigating police action during the student protests on July 22nd and 25th. It is examining how many students were detained, how many were arrested, under what sections the cases were filed, and to what extent legal provisions were followed throughout the process.

He alleged that students who peacefully protested against question paper leaks and alleged irregularities in the education system were brutally targeted. According to him, several students have filed complaints with the committee alleging illegal detention, mental torture, and violation of their legal rights. He also claimed that serious questions have been raised about the treatment of minor students.

Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar said in a press conference that the government should clarify at what level the orders for lathicharge, tear gas, and use of force against students were given. He said that if the government has decided to withdraw the cases filed against the protesters, a mere announcement is not enough; instead, accountability must be fixed for the officials responsible for the entire incident.

He said that the country’s youth are constantly asking why question papers are repeatedly leaked in competitive exams and why the credibility of the education system is being questioned. Instead of answering these questions, attempts to suppress students’ voices are inconsistent with democratic values.

He said the committee will prepare a detailed report based on all documents, FIRs, statements from victims, and other available evidence, which will be submitted to the AICC. Justice will be sought in other legal forums, including the High Court, based on this report if necessary.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Congress MLA Jaivardhan Singh said that the investigation is not limited to Patna, but that incidents in other districts, including Jehanabad, Gaya, and Siwan, are also being investigated. He alleged that excessive force was used against peacefully protesting students, and in many cases, even minors were not treated according to the law.
