India’s 23-year-old Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh created history by winning gold medals in their respective categories in the judo competition. The victory gap between the two athletes was just 30 minutes.
She became the first Indian to win gold.
In the women’s category, Asmita Dey performed brilliantly. In the women’s 48kg final, she defeated Canada’s Heidi Quach in a golden score bout to win the gold medal. With this victory, Asmita became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in judo at the Commonwealth Games.
Harsh Singh also won gold
Just 30 minutes after Asmita’s gold medal win, India’s Harsh Singh also made history by winning a gold medal in judo. Harsh defeated veteran Australian Joshua Katz in the final of the men’s 60kg category to win the gold medal. With this, Harsh became the first Indian male athlete to win a gold medal in judo at the Commonwealth Games.
The wait of 36 years is over
It’s worth noting that judo was included as a medal event at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland. Indian athletes won medals thereafter, but none won gold for the country. Now, 23-year-olds Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh have ended this 36-year wait and etched their names in golden letters in the history of Indian judo.
