Mumbai Megaprojects: To ease the increasing traffic congestion in Mumbai and speed up connectivity between suburbs, 3 ambitious megaprojects have been completed and will soon be put into service of Mumbaikars . According to the information given by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the Chembur extension of Metro Line 2B , the BKC elevated stretch of Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) and the second phase of Thane-Borivali Link Tunnel will start working from next week. These infrastructure facilities will make the east-west journey of Mumbaikars very easy and fast.
BKC elevated route of Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR)
The new BKC elevated road on the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road is a modern flyover of approximately 1.4 km in length. It connects the Eastern Suburbs and Sion-Panvel Highway directly to the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). This important project will completely eliminate the daily heavy traffic jams in the Vakola, Kurla and Kalanagar junction areas and will enable commuters to travel directly without signals. As a result, thousands of employees who commute to corporate offices in BKC every day will save 30 to 35 minutes in travel time and will also save a lot of fuel. Mumbai Megaprojects
Metro Line 2B (Mandalay to D.N. Nagar) Chembur Extension
Metro Line 2B, which directly connects the eastern and western suburbs of Mumbai, is a very important 23.6-km long line. Under this project, the extension of ‘Diamond Garden’ in Chembur and the main Chembur station will be connected, which will provide a better option for the citizens of Mankhurd, Mandala and Chembur areas with faster travel. This metro line will be interconnected with Mumbai’s local railway, monorail and other metro lines (Line 1 and 2A), thus providing the convenience of ‘multimodal’ travel to the passengers. This project will significantly reduce the traffic congestion on the roads, and the journey from the eastern to the western suburbs will be very fast, air-conditioned and easy. Mumbai Megaprojects
Thane-Borivali Link Tunnel
This 11.84 km long inner city tunnel passing under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) is the largest inner city tunnel in the country. A modern ‘TBM Arjun’ machine has been deployed for the excavation of the second underpass of this project. At present, it takes 90 minutes to travel from Thane to Borivali via Ghodbunder Road. Once this underpass is fully operational, this long journey will come down to just 15 minutes. This will reduce the traffic congestion on Ghodbunder Road and save lakhs of litres of fuel. Travel hassles gone forever
The MMRDA has sought dates from the Chief Minister’s Office for the inauguration of these projects and all three projects will be opened to the public in early August or on Independence Day. With these mega projects being implemented simultaneously, the traffic congestion between the eastern and western suburbs, which is the biggest headache in Mumbai, will be solved forever.
