On Monday, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya praised India's achievements at the Commonwealth Games 2026 held in Glasgow, noting the country's impressive fourth-place finish.

In a post shared on X, Mandaviya emphasized the increase in India's medal count in events featured in both the Birmingham 2022 and Glasgow 2026 games. He stated, "India concludes the Commonwealth Games 2026 with a commendable fourth-place finish. Even though Glasgow 2026 had fewer events where India typically excels, our team improved from 30 medals in Birmingham 2022 to 39 medals this year."

India Set to Host Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030

The Sports Minister attributed the success to the growing strength and depth of Indian sports under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, commending the athletes, coaches, and support staff for their dedication. He remarked, "The increasing depth and strength of Indian sports is evident. I am proud of every athlete, coach, and support staff member who represented our nation with pride."

Mandaviya also expressed India's commitment to hosting an unforgettable Commonwealth Games in 2030, stating, "As we gear up for the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030, we are dedicated to making it one of the most remarkable editions in the history of the Games."

Closing Ceremony Highlights

The 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded after 11 days of competition, with Scotland officially handing over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India during a spectacular closing ceremony. India will host the centenary edition in Ahmedabad in 2030, becoming only the second country after Australia to host the multi-sport event multiple times, having previously done so in New Delhi in 2010.

The flag and baton were presented to Indian representatives, including Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, as part of the official handover.

Medal Tally Overview

India celebrated a successful campaign, finishing fourth in the medal standings with a total of 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze. While this tally was lower than the 61 medals achieved in Birmingham 2022, it is important to note that 30 of those medals were from sports not included in the Glasgow program.

Despite sending only 122 athletes compared to 210 four years ago, India maintained its fourth-place ranking and achieved a better medal conversion rate, with 38 athletes returning home with medals. Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh stood out as the only Indian to secure two medals.

Looking Ahead to Ahmedabad 2030

With the ceremonial handover complete, all eyes are now on Ahmedabad, which is set to host the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030.
