Boxing and athletics won the most medals, with 10 each. Indian boxers performed as expected, winning seven gold medals, a record for a single Commonwealth Games.

The number of medals in athletics was in the double digits, but no gold medals were won. Neeraj Chopra also finished second in the javelin throw final. Weightlifting brought home eight medals. Mirabai Chanu won gold, completing a historic hat-trick of CWG titles. Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh made history in judo. Para-athletes also performed exceptionally well.

Para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar opened the country’s medal tally in Glasgow. Para athletics also saw a plethora of medals. However, India failed to win any medals in some sports. Let’s explore the sports that disappointed.

3×3 basketball

India’s women’s wheelchair basketball team qualified for the Games. Although the four-member team failed to win a medal, they still made history. This was the first time an Indian para-sports team had competed at the Commonwealth Games. They finished at the bottom of their group, which included teams from Scotland, Wales, and Nigeria. Given the Indian team’s experience, the result was not unexpected.

Artistic Gymnastics

India sent eight athletes to the Games, but no medals were won. Only Tapan Mohanty and Pratishtha Samant reached the finals. According to reports, Pranati Nayak competed despite an injury, raising questions about the team selection. India’s last CWG medal in gymnastics came in 2014.

Lawn bowls

India’s strong six-member lawn bowls team narrowly missed out on a medal. The women’s pair of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh were one ball away from eliminating England but missed the mark. England eventually became the champions. Similarly, the men’s pairs team also lost to England in a tie-break.

swimming

Not much was expected from the Indian swimmers. This was because the Australian swimmers were present in Glasgow, who were strong medal contenders. The Indian swimmers’ performance was also not particularly impressive.
