Chelsea have reached a verbal agreement to sell Trevoh Chalobah to Italian side Como, bringing the defender’s long association with the West London club close to an end. The move is a major boost for Cesc Fabregas, who has been keen to take the versatile academy product to Serie A.

Chelsea academy graduate set for Italian move

Chelsea have now formally struck a verbal agreement with Como for Chalobah’s permanent transfer, drawing a line under one of the most talked-about stories of the summer transfer window.

According to The Sun, the 26-year-old, who has been a regular presence in the Blues setup since his youth career, is now expected to travel to Italy to complete the transfer after both clubs agreed the financial structure of the deal.

The agreement between the clubs is believed to include a fixed fee of €30m, a further €6m in add-ons and a sell-on clause for the English centre-back. The overall package, which could rise to €36m, matches the valuation Chelsea had placed on the defender earlier this summer.

Although there was interest from other clubs in Europe as well as from within the Premier League, Como’s project under former Chelsea star Fabregas emerged as the most attractive choice for the player, who wants to establish himself as a regular starter in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Fabregas lands an important defensive addition

For Cesc Fabregas, signing Chalobah would be a significant statement of ambition from the Italian club. The Spanish coach has been eager to strengthen his back line with experienced players capable of playing out from the back, and Chalobah is seen as an ideal fit for that role.

Reports suggest the breakthrough came after talks over Chalobah’s exit from Chelsea gathered pace again, eventually resulting in the current verbal agreement.

Chalobah had already agreed personal terms on a long-term contract with the ambitious Italian side several weeks ago, which cleared the path for the move once the clubs settled on a transfer fee. The defender is also understood to have been enthusiastic about the switch to Italy, with the chance to play Champions League football seen as a major pull.

End of a chapter at Stamford Bridge

Chalobah progressed through Chelsea’s academy and went on to make 151 first-team appearances after loan spells at Ipswich, Huddersfield and Lorient, but he now appears ready to start a new phase of his career with Fabregas’ fast-rising Como team.

His exit means another homegrown player is leaving the club, continuing a pattern Chelsea fans have become used to in recent seasons. While Chalobah remained a respected member of the squad and was often commended for his professionalism, the arrival of newer defensive signings meant his route to regular first-team football in West London had become increasingly blocked.

A move to Italian football will give Chalobah the opportunity to follow the path taken by other English defenders, including Fikayo Tomori and Chris Smalling, who have enjoyed notable success in Serie A.
