New Delhi: India has achieved a major milestone in banking coverage by providing banking facilities to almost all villages.
Banking services are now available in villages with a population of about 99.92 per cent in the country, Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary informed the Lok Sabha on Monday.
Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha that India has achieved the goal of providing almost universal banking facilities. 99.92 percent of the country’s populated villages now have access to a banking outlet within a five-kilometer radius.
Chaudhary told the House that as per the data uploaded by banks on the Jan Dhan Darshak (JDD) app, out of 6,01,328 villages with 99.92 per cent population, now 6,00,868 villages have a banking branch comprising a bank, business correspondent and India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) within a radius of 5 km.
The Minister of State for Finance informed that as of July 17, 2026, the nationwide banking network is supported by more than 1.81 lakh bank branches, 17.36 lakh Business Correspondents and 1.65 lakh India Post Payments Bank Centres, which provide financial services in urban, rural and remote areas.
Pankaj Chaudhary said that as of July 17, a total of 587.7 million Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) bank accounts had been opened in the country. A total of ₹312,414 crore was deposited in these accounts.
