New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched a new campaign to raise awareness about the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), or digital rupee, in the country. As part of this initiative, the RBI is sending official messages to citizens via WhatsApp to provide accurate information about the digital currency’s uses, security, and facts.

The RBI aims to promote digital payments and to educate the public that the digital rupee is the country’s official digital currency, issued by the central bank. It is a digital alternative to paper notes and coins and carries the sovereign guarantee of the central bank.

RBI alerted people

In light of the increasing cyber fraud, the Reserve Bank has also advised people to remain vigilant. The bank clarified that it is crucial to verify the authenticity of any message to digital currency. Any WhatsApp message claiming free digital currency, KYC updates, or requiring you to click on an unknown link should be immediately ignored, as such messages may be part of a scam.

The RBI has advised people to only trust messages from its verified business accounts. The official account features a verification badge, a Reserve Bank profile, and authorized business information. Furthermore, the bank clarified that it does not offer an “RBI Digital Rupee App” itself.

Use digital payment apps

Digital Rupee can be used only through authorised commercial banks. Customers having accounts with banks participating in this pilot project like SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda and other authorised banks can use it by downloading their bank’s official Digital Rupee app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

What is the objective of the campaign?

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) stated that the public awareness campaign aims to provide accurate and authentic banking information, dispel misconceptions about digital currency, and raise awareness about cybersecurity. The bank urged citizens to trust only information from official sources and avoid any suspicious links or fraudulent apps.
