How did Lord Shiva save his life?

According to legend, King Shvetaketu was always engrossed in devotion to Lord Shiva. Then, his time of death arrived. Chitragupta informed Yamaraj that King Shvetaketu’s lifespan had ended. Yamaraj then ordered his messengers to take Shvetaketu’s life. When the messengers reached Shvetaketu, he was meditating in front of a Shivalinga in a temple. Seeing this, the messengers waited outside the temple for a long time. Unable to take his life for a long time, Yamaraj became enraged. Enraged, Yamaraj himself arrived to take Shvetaketu’s life. He saw Shvetaketu completely absorbed in Shiva’s devotion, but he didn’t pause for a moment. He attempted to take his life within the temple’s sanctum sanctorum. Then, Lord Shiva opened his third eye. The radiance of his third eye reduced Yamaraj to ashes. Shvetaketu’s meditation was broken after Yamaraj was consumed.

Yamraj was brought back to life

When Shvetaketu learned that Lord Shiva had incinerated Yamaraj to save him, he humbly requested that fear of Yamaraj prevents people from committing evil deeds. Furthermore, fear also motivates people to perform good deeds. Therefore, please grant him life.

Hearing Shvetaketu’s prayer, Lord Shiva granted Yama’s life. After his revival, Yama declared that anyone who sincerely worships Lord Shiva, wears a Rudraksha bead around their neck, and recites Shiva mantras with devotion will never fear premature death.
