Automobile Desk: Ather Energy is preparing to make a splash in the Indian electric two-wheeler market. The company will launch its new electric scooter on August 29th, based on the all-new EL platform. This scooter is generating considerable excitement in the automotive industry, as it is designed with budget-conscious customers in mind. Ather Energy CEO Tarun Mehta recently shared a first glimpse of this new scooter rolling off the assembly line on social media, sparking heated discussions about its design and features.
In terms of design, this new scooter will be significantly different and stronger than previous Ather models. While Ather has previously used polymer body panels on its scooters, this new model is expected to feature metal body panels. Additionally, it is expected to feature an integrated headlight setup on the handlebar and a striking wide LED DRL (Daytime Running Light) on the front apron. This new look of the scooter closely matches the company’s recently filed patent design, giving it a spotty yet premium commuter look.
Technically, this scooter will be built on the company’s all-new and modular ‘EL platform’. According to Ather Energy, this platform has been developed based on millions of kilometers of field testing and data. This multipurpose platform is capable of supporting battery packs ranging from 2kWh to 5kWh. It also features a quiet gear drive motor, built-in charger, and low-maintenance parts. However, the company has not yet released final details about the battery capacity of this specific model to be launched.
On the pricing front, this new electric scooter could prove to be very affordable for customers. Market experts and reports believe that its potential ex-showroom price could be between ₹1 lakh and ₹1.25 lakh. If the company launches it at this price, it will be a cheaper option than Ather’s existing models, the 450 Series and the recently launched Rizta. Currently, the Ather Rizta starts at around ₹1.21 lakh, while the 450 Series starts at ₹1.28 lakh. With this low price, Ather plans to directly compete with other companies in the mainstream commuter segment.
August 29th will not be limited to just a scooter launch for Ather Energy. The company’s top management has hinted that several other important announcements and new products or services may also be unveiled at this mega event. While the scooter’s exact range, top speed, battery capacity, and final pricing will only be revealed on launch day, these initial details have certainly increased the competition in the Indian electric vehicle market.
