V2V Communication System: To elevate road safety in India, the central government is rapidly working towards implementing a modern technology. In the future, vehicles on the road will not only move but also share vital information with each other. This new technology is called Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) Communication System . The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a draft notification regarding this, in which it has been proposed to make this system mandatory in new vehicles in a phased manner.

What is V2V communication system?

V2V, or Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication , is a smart wireless technology that allows vehicles on the road to share vital information with each other. This includes vehicle speed, direction, location, braking status, and other important data.

The biggest advantage of this is that the driver will receive advance information about potential danger. For example, if the vehicle ahead suddenly stops, a vehicle is approaching from the wrong direction, or an emergency vehicle is in the way, the system will issue an early alert. This will provide additional time for reaction and significantly reduce the risk of accidents.

The driver will receive several advanced safety alerts (V2V Communication System)

The new technology will allow vehicles to instantly transmit a variety of safety messages to each other, including:

• Sudden braking alert from the vehicle ahead
• Forward Collision Warning
• Wrong-way vehicle alert
• Emergency vehicle approaching alert
• Unsafe lane change warning

The government believes that this technology will make existing safety features like ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) more effective.

When can the new rules come into effect?

According to the draft proposal, the V2V system is planned to be implemented in two phases. The rule will apply to L, M, and N category vehicles, which include two-wheelers, passenger vehicles, and commercial vehicles.

• October 1, 2027: Vehicles with V2V systems will be required to comply with AIS-230 standards.
• October 1, 2028: It is proposed to make it mandatory for all new trains to have AIS-230 compliant V2V systems.

The government says that this time period is aimed at giving automobile companies ample opportunity to develop new technology and prepare the production process.

Why is AIS-230 important?

AIS-230 is India’s new technical standard that will ensure the quality and security of V2V systems. It focuses not only on technical performance but also on cybersecurity and secure data transmission.

This standard covers several technical parameters to radio performance, GNSS-based location systems, electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, cyber security and road safety.

There could be a significant reduction in road accidents.

Experts believe that with the implementation of V2V technology, vehicles will be able to operate more safely on the road. On highways, expressways, and in areas with heavy traffic, this system can play a vital role in preventing accidents by providing timely warnings to drivers.

This technology will also be crucial in promoting connected and smart mobility in the future. This will enable India’s auto sector to keep pace with global cutting-edge technologies.

The government is currently seeking suggestions

This proposal has just been released as a draft notification. The ministry has invited suggestions from automobile companies, experts, and the general public within the next 30 days. Final rules will be issued after reviewing the suggestions. If implemented, new vehicles on Indian roads in the coming years will be smarter, safer, and more technologically advanced than ever before.
