The continuous rains have alleviated Mumbaikars’ year-round water worries. The catchment areas of all seven lakes that supply Mumbai with water have received substantial rainfall. This has brought the lakes’ total water reserves to 90.06 percent. Four of these lakes have already overflowed. This has brought relief to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation administration.
According to the Municipal Corporation’s Water Department, most of the useful water storage capacity in all seven reservoirs has been filled. The rapidly rising water levels in the reservoirs have significantly reduced the fears of a potential water crisis this year. As a precautionary measure, the Municipal Corporation had implemented a 10 percent water cut in the city. However, with the water level in the reservoirs now exceeding 90 percent, there is hope that this cut may be reconsidered in the coming days. However, the final decision will depend on the Municipal Corporation’s review and further weather conditions.
Experts say that if above-normal rainfall continues in the catchment areas in August and September, all reservoirs will be filled to full capacity. This will ensure Mumbai’s drinking water supply remains secure until next year’s monsoon. Municipal Corporation officials say that the status of the reservoirs is being continuously monitored. With adequate water storage, the city’s drinking water system is currently in a strong position. There is no possibility of any water availability crisis in the coming months.
