A video of Team India’s star batsman KL Rahul is rapidly going viral on social media. In the video, Rahul is seen discussing his captaincy experiences in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rahul says that the most difficult task for him as captain in the IPL was attending meeting after meeting at the ownership level and explaining everything. He would become more tired in a two-month IPL than he would be after playing 10 months of international cricket.

Rahul believes that in international cricket, one has to answer to coaches and selectors who understand the nuances of the game. Meanwhile, in the IPL, franchise owners demand an explanation for everything. It’s difficult to convince them because they don’t have a sporting background. Rahul’s statement is being linked to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner Sanjiv Goenka. Goenka reprimanded team captain Rahul on the field after LSG’s poor performance during IPL 2024. Rahul looked very disappointed at the time. Following this, Rahul left LSG.

Rahul explained that in the IPL, team owners constantly ask questions like why a particular decision was made, why a particular player was selected, or why the team’s performance was poor. He said that the owners don’t understand that no matter what you do, winning the game is never guaranteed. Without naming Goenka, Rahul said that he believes every decision will yield the right outcome.

What was the whole controversy?

In match number 57 of IPL 2024, LSG faced Sunrisers Hyderabad. At the Uppal Stadium, LSG won the toss and batted first and scored 165 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. At one point, LSG was struggling at 66 runs for 4 wickets in 11.2 overs. From here, Nicholas Pooran (48 not out in 26 balls) and Ayush Badoni (55 not out in 30 balls) batted brilliantly and took the team to a respectable score. However, this target proved to be dwarfed in the storm of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head.  

SRH won the match by scoring 167 runs in just 9.4 overs. The LSG team looked helpless throughout the match. As soon as the match ended, team owner Goenka came onto the field and started berating Rahul in front of everyone, causing a huge uproar. Rahul felt deeply insulted by his behavior and left the team the following season. Goenka has tried to mend his relationship with Rahul several times, but it seems Rahul still hasn’t forgotten that night.
