New Delhi: In India, the accounts of several WhatsApp users suddenly came under scrutiny on Monday night, causing significant concern. Many users saw an “Under Review” notification upon opening the app. They were told that their account activity and phone information were being reviewed. This process could take approximately 24 hours to complete.

Suddenly the account went ‘Under Review’

The issue began appearing around 8 p.m. Monday night. Many users reported receiving no clear warning before the account was taken down. Upon opening WhatsApp, a message appeared on the screen stating that the account was being investigated.

During the review period, affected users experienced difficulty using some essential features of the app, which was exacerbated for those whose work or daily interactions depend on WhatsApp.

Users expressed their displeasure on social media

Many people have taken to social media platform X after their accounts were suddenly suspended or placed under review. Users shared their concerns and questioned why their accounts were subject to this action.

Some claimed they hadn’t violated any rules, yet their accounts were still under investigation. Some users also reported that they didn’t receive an immediate resolution after appealing, and that the screen simply displayed general information about the process.

During the account review, users were also shown instructions on responsible use of WhatsApp. They also had options for reporting stolen phone or account information. The company stated this process was primarily aimed at monitoring misuse of the platform and suspicious activity.

What did WhatsApp say on the action?

A WhatsApp spokesperson stated that the company continuously monitors accounts suspected of abusing the service to protect other users. However, the company acknowledged that sometimes the system can make mistakes and actions may be taken against legitimate users’ accounts. 

In such cases, the company attempts to quickly fix the issue so that affected users can resume using WhatsApp normally. Currently, users affected by the sudden account review are waiting for the 24-hour review process to complete.
