The Sunetra Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Tuesday hit out at the Congress over a social media post that referred to Maharashtra Deputy CM Sunetra Pawar and Ajit Pawar.

In its post, the Congress party asked, “How long will Sunetra Pawar continue to be a ‘dumb doll?'” Reacting sharply to the Congress, NCP chief spokesperson Umesh Patil asked, “By resorting to the derogatory phrase ‘dumb doll,’ is the Congress indirectly legitimizing the historical criticism directed at former Prime Minister, the late Indira Gandhi?”

Patil said that in a democratic system, ideological differences and critical views regarding policies are both necessary, but various derogatory language regarding women should have no place in the political sphere.

Recalling historical incidents, Patil said that similar derogatory language was used by Indira Gandhi’s political rivals when she started her political career.

He said, “Indira Gandhi responded to these political rivals not through statements but through her achievements. The global recognition she achieved for her stance on issues like the Bangladesh Liberation War and national security earned her widespread admiration. Even her rivals were compelled to praise her, impressed by her.”

NCP chief spokesperson Umesh Patil questioned the Congress party’s use of such unjust and critical language against women. He questioned whether the Congress party’s use of such language was an endorsement of its earlier critical remarks against Indira Gandhi.

Patil pointed out that this reflects the political culture at its core and the way women are treated. Debate and criticism are permissible in a democratic system, but using derogatory language against a woman is an affront to the dignity of the public.

At the end of his statement, Umesh Patil demanded that Congress should withdraw this derogatory comment and maintain a dignified language among the general public.

Party official Suraj Chavan also criticized the Congress party. According to him, the Congress party has always had a civilized political ideology. However, at present, the Congress party has drifted away from this ideology and its people.

Respect for women in the party should be reflected not only in speeches but also in thoughts. However, the Congress party’s social media posts clearly reflect its ideology. The Congress party in Maharashtra currently faces a fractured leadership.
