A comment by the Congress party in Maharashtra has sparked a new political controversy. The state unit criticized the wife of the late Ajit Pawar and current Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar for recent public appearances, calling her a “dumb doll.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) reacted sharply to the comment, accusing the Congress party of insulting women and lowering the level of political discourse. The controversy comes at a time when speculation is rife about a reunification between the two factions of the NCP in Maharashtra politics, adding a new twist to the ongoing political turmoil in the state.

Significantly, the Maharashtra Congress questioned Sunetra Pawar’s recent press conference and visit to Beed, asking how long she would continue to remain a “dumb doll.” The party criticized her for allegedly remaining silent on important issues while interacting with people. Leaders of the NCP, part of the ruling Mahayuti alliance, immediately objected to this comment.

NCP accuses Congress of insulting women

Reacting to the Congress statement, NCP leaders said that while Congress once had a distinct political culture and maintained certain standards in public discourse, it has now deviated from its ideology and values. The party accused Congress of disrespecting women by using such language against a female leader.

According to NCP leaders, the choice of words reflects the Congress party’s thinking and exposes its declining political standing. They also alleged that the Maharashtra Congress leadership has fallen into the wrong hands, leading to a deterioration in political language and behavior.

Rohit Pawar supported the context behind the Congress statement

Interestingly, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) MLA Rohit Pawar indirectly defended the Congress stance, saying that the context in which the statement was made was more important than the phrase itself. Referring to Sunetra Pawar’s recent press conference, Rohit Pawar said that while she was answering a journalist’s question, Minister Dhananjay Munde interrupted her and silenced her. He argued that if Ajit Pawar had been present, he would have asked Munde not to interrupt.

Former PM Indira Gandhi was also once called a ‘ dumb doll ‘ .

According to Rohit Pawar, Sunetra Pawar should have stated her point firmly and stopped Dhananjay Munde from interrupting her. He further said that calling someone a “dumb doll” can be viewed both positively and negatively. He said, “It can also be viewed positively because former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was also once called a “dumb doll,” but later she proved herself with her leadership abilities.”
