New Delhi: Authorities have issued an orange alert for the entire country of Guatemala after the Fuego volcano in the Central American country became active again. The volcanic activity, which began Monday morning, intensified by evening, prompting an evacuation operation to evacuate residents living in the surrounding areas. Officials say the hot ash, gas, and lava emanating from the volcano pose a significant threat to surrounding areas.
The dust storm reached a height of six kilometres.
According to the national disaster management agency, CONRED, a massive plume of ash from the Fuego volcano is reaching a height of about six kilometers, while lava is continuously flowing down its slopes. Given the severity of the situation, two villages near the volcano, located about 35 kilometers from the capital, Guatemala City, are being evacuated.
Citizens were advised to have a security plan ready.
Conred spokesperson Valeria Urizar urged citizens to move to safer locations immediately if authorities issue evacuation orders. She also advised people to prepare essential supplies for emergencies and activate family safety plans. The country’s Institute of Volcanology has warned that Fuego Volcano could enter a more explosive phase. Residents, especially in its western and southern regions, have been asked to be vigilant about hot volcanic debris and strong ash flows.
National Highway RN-14 closed
Additionally, authorities have closed National Highway RN-14, which leads to the Las Lajas area, as a safety precaution. Offline classes have also been temporarily suspended in many schools in the affected areas. Traffic has also been halted on mountain roads, disrupting connectivity to several areas.
Where is Guatemala located?
Guatemala lies within the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire,” a region frequently affected by earthquakes and volcanic activity. Previously, in 2023, approximately 1,200 people were evacuated when the Fuego volcano erupted. In 2018, a massive eruption killed 215 people and left many others missing.
