DMK president and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday strongly condemned the arrest of Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin in the Assembly, alleging that the TVK government led by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was resorting to police action to divert people’s attention from its alleged failure on the Cauvery water dispute.

M.K. Stalin said that Udhayanidhi Stalin had asked the government several questions regarding the Cauvery water dispute. He alleged that the government had failed to ensure adequate water for Tamil Nadu and to stop the Mekedatu dam project proposed by Karnataka. Stalin said that farmers were distressed, but the Chief Minister and his ministers could not provide satisfactory answers to the opposition’s questions.

He alleged that the purpose of Udhayanidhi’s arrest was to divert public attention from the Cauvery dispute. Stalin said that on Tuesday morning, a police team arrived at Udhayanidhi Stalin’s residence in Chennai and arrested him and took him to Thanjavur in connection with a case to an alleged statement made during a DMK protest in Thanjavur.

He also questioned the timing of the proceedings, noting that the Tamil Nadu Assembly’s budget session is scheduled to begin on Wednesday. According to him, the government deliberately arrested Udhayanidhi a day before the session so that he, as Leader of the Opposition, would not be able to participate in the House proceedings.

Stalin said the arrest sparked protests by DMK workers across the state. Following this, the government told the Madras High Court that it had no intention of detaining Udhayanidhi and would release him after questioning.

He questioned why Udhayanidhi was taken from Chennai to Thanjavur if the police were only interested in questioning him. He also objected to the case being registered under several serious sections, including non-bailable ones.

The DMK chief welcomed the Madras High Court’s direction to release Udhayanidhi after questioning, calling it a blow to the alleged dictatorial attitude of the TVK government.

Targeting Chief Minister Vijay, Stalin alleged that since assuming power, he has focused more on social media than on fulfilling his promises to the public. He said the Chief Minister should now understand the responsibilities of his position and focus on governance.

Stalin also demanded the immediate release of DMK workers arrested across the state for protesting the arrest of Udhayanidhi Stalin. He warned that arrogance in governance ends in political downfall.
