The pen is mightier than the sword! Pakistan has reminded us of this common saying. The Shahbaz Sharif government has banned the international media outlet Al Jazeera for publishing a series of reports on the anti-government movement and the repression of the administration in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). They have accused the world-famous media outlet of ‘yellow journalism’.

According to multiple media reports, access to Al Jazeera’s English website has been blocked in Pakistan. Although the Shahbaz Sharif-led government has not yet officially announced the ban, many Pakistani citizens have claimed on social media that they are unable to access the English version of Al Jazeera’s website.

Pakistan’s Information and Broadcasting Ministry, while not directly commenting on the issue, has strongly criticized Al Jazeera’s “misleading” and “targeted” reporting, claiming that the media outlet has selectively broadcasted certain information and the statements of certain individuals, thereby misrepresenting the election and voting process in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) region.

In a statement issued on X, the ministry said, “We have noticed Al Jazeera’s selective reporting from selected polling stations in Muzaffarabad today. By choosing a specific time and broadcasting pre-planned statements from selected individuals, they have attempted to misrepresent the AJK elections and voting process.”

Incidentally, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir has been in turmoil for more than a year. The civil society of occupied Kashmir is continuing its movement demanding its rights. Economic crisis, deprivation of common citizens, and imposition of one restriction after another have been causing anger in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir for a long time. On top of that, the failure of the local administration has further intensified the protests. Voting has already begun in occupied Kashmir. Even then, unrest continues.

The 12 reserved seats have become the focus of conflict in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The joint platform of various organizations, JAAC, has demanded that the 12 reserved seats be withdrawn. Questions are also being raised about the role of the Pakistani government. Meanwhile, instead of addressing the protests, the Shahbaz government is being accused of suppressing them. It is alleged that at least 20 protesters were killed in firing by security forces last week. In this situation, a section of local residents have warned that if their demands are not met, they will seek help from India. Al Jazeera has become an eye-opener for Pakistan by reporting such news on the international stage.
