CWG 2026: Mirabai Chanu’s golden feat, boosting India’s prestige with historic win

New Delhi: India’s star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu once again raised the Indian flag high at the Commonwealth Games 2026. With a strong performance, she won the gold medal in the women’s 48 kg category. This marked her third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, completing a golden hat-trick.

By lifting 85 kg, Mirabai created a new record. This time, she not only won but also created history. By lifting 85 kg, she set a new Commonwealth record. This is the highest weight lifted by any female weightlifter in CWG history.

Interestingly, Mirabai broke two records in a single day. In her first attempt, she broke the previous CWG record by lifting 82 kg. Then, in her third attempt, she set a new benchmark by lifting 85 kg with ease.

Sports experts say that this record is not limited to the Commonwealth Games alone. This is one of the biggest records set by an athlete from any Commonwealth country in a major international competition like the World Championships or the Olympics.

Initial setback, then a spectacular comeback

Mirabai’s start wasn’t easy. In her first attempt at 82 kg, she lifted the weight above her head, but lost her balance in the final attempt and had to drop the barbell. Despite being a two-time CWG champion, the initial failure certainly created some pressure.

But Mirabai didn’t lose composure. She displayed tremendous form in her next two attempts. After 82 kg, she jumped directly to 85 kg and completed it with confidence. As the tricolor waved throughout the stadium and the national anthem played, every Indian’s eyes were moist.

Third consecutive gold, named Golden Hattrick

After winning the 2018 Gold Coast and 2022 Birmingham, Mirabai completed a hat-trick by winning gold in 2026. She became the first Indian female weightlifter to win three consecutive gold medals at the CWG. Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu has brought medals to the country several times before.

However, her third consecutive victory at the CWG sets her apart. The way she has bounced back, despite injury and withdrawal, is an inspiration for young athletes. Mirabai’s victory has also given a major boost to India’s medal tally.
