New Delhi: Heavy rains have lashed many states across the country . Normal life has been completely disrupted due to lightning strikes and landslides. 11 people have died and 14 have been seriously injured in different incidents of lightning strikes in Bihar and Bengal. The dead include 7 from various districts of Bihar and 4 from Howrah in Bengal. The rains are also affecting the hilly states.
A sudden landslide on the Badrinath National Highway in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand disrupted traffic. Around 200 pilgrims have been waiting for the road to reopen for 24 hours due to large debris and rocks falling on the road. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), El Nino and changes in sea temperature are being closely monitored for the remaining period of the monsoon season.
If El Niño intensifies in the coming months, it could lead to the formation of a positive IOD, which would help reduce the adverse effects of El Niño on the monsoon. In addition, sea surface temperatures around Indonesia and Java Island are gradually decreasing.
Chance of heavy rain in the next two weeks
The southwest monsoon is likely to become more active in the country in the next 15 days. The conditions prevailing in the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal are favourable for rains across the country. The Indian Ocean Dipole is currently in a neutral state. However, severe storm activity is ongoing over the eastern Indian Ocean.
Waterlogging in plains; Schools closed in Agra
Rains in the plains have turned cities into lakes. In Agra, Uttar Pradesh, intermittent rains that have been continuing since late Monday night have led to 2 to 3 feet of water logging in many low-lying areas.
