Tamil Nadu’s political landscape was rocked throughout the day on Tuesday when Leader of the Opposition and DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested for allegedly making offensive remarks about actress Trisha. However, following the Madras High Court’s direction, Udhayanidhi was released in the evening after questioning.

It’s worth noting that Udhayanidhi was also present at a rally in Thanjavur on Monday regarding the Cauvery water dispute. During the rally, the crowd chanted “Trisha, Trisha!” It’s alleged that Udhayanidhi responded, “Whether the water reaches elsewhere or not, it must reach there.” He later clarified that he was referring to the Cauvery water.

Udhayanidhi was taken away from his home by the police.

However, Udhayanidhi’s comments escalated the situation. Chief Minister Thalapathy Vijay also took action, and local police took Udhayanidhi from his home. They filed a case against him under six sections.

The way for release was opened on the instructions of the Madras High Court.

To avoid arrest, Udhayanidhi filed an anticipatory bail application in the Madras High Court. However, before that application could be heard, the police arrested him. The Madras High Court has ordered that Udhayanidhi be released today after questioning.

Udhayanidhi’s bail plea was heard in the court of Justice G.K. Ilanthiraiyan. During the hearing, government lawyer Vijay Narayan told the court that the government did not want to remand the opposition leader. He said that he would be released on station bail on Tuesday itself, after the interrogation was completed.

Trisha had come to meet Vijay after his victory in the assembly elections.

It’s worth noting that the Tamil Nadu Assembly results were announced on May 4th. T. Vijay’s party, the Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), won 108 of the state’s 234 seats. That day was Trisha’s birthday. Before the results were announced, she visited the Tirumala temple, offered prayers, and then went to Vijay’s home. Trisha later attended Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony.

Vijay and Trisha’s chemistry has been much talked about. They have appeared together in about five films, including the superhit film Leo, released in 2023. This was during the time Vijay’s wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, was fighting for divorce in court.

TVK had said in its manifesto that it would provide Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

As for the Cauvery water dispute, TVK stated in its manifesto that Tamil Nadu’s Cauvery water rights would be fully protected. The state’s share of water would be ensured at all costs. Opposition to Karnataka’s Mekedatu Dam project would continue. Pressure would be exerted on the central government to strictly enforce the orders of the Cauvery Water Management Authority.

The Cauvery water dispute is about the sharing of water from the Cauvery River between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The river originates in Karnataka and flows into Tamil Nadu. Karnataka uses it for irrigation and drinking water, while Tamil Nadu’s agriculture sector is entirely dependent on it.
