FIFA has found itself at the centre of fresh controversy after failing to release the funds it had promised to host cities for the upcoming World Cup, according to a report by The Athletic. Each of the host venues in the United States was due to receive 1 million dollars in sports legacy payments.
The host cities are Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Vancouver, Toronto, Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, Houston, Seattle, San Francisco, Kansas, Boston and Philadelphia.
With deadlines having passed and the committed money still not transferred, local authorities across the various host venues have voiced strong objections, The Athletic reported. Municipal administrations are firmly insisting that the global governing body make the payments without further delay.
This delay in funding is creating serious institutional discomfort on the eve of the global tournament. According to The Athletic, the united demand from the host cities adds another layer of controversy to the way world football’s top governing leadership is being managed.
