India managed to win just one match on the UK tour, and the debacle was not taken lightly by the BCCI, who revealed that a review meeting would be held once the players returned home. However, the meeting didn’t take place despite the presence of all the stakeholders in the country. India went down 0-2 against Ireland before losing 0-4 against England. Shreyas Iyer, the new T20I captain, was unable to inspire the team to success. In the ODI leg, the scoreline went in favour of England as they secured two wins compared to India’s one.
According to a report in Dainik Jagran, the review meeting was postponed due to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia’s illness. The meeting is scheduled to take place in the coming days, with head coach Gautam Gambhir, who is in Sri Lanka, likely to attend virtually.
Indian batters were unable to adapt to the conditions, and the longer boundaries also resulted in their downfall. Former players mentioned that the long exposure to flat wickets in India during the IPL and other series was behind the ordinary performances.
Gambhir also acknowledged that India players needed to get used to the conditions.
“It is important to adapt to the conditions and read the game. Sometimes the breeze plays a key role. Sometimes the bigger dimensions on one side of the ground can become a challenge. These are small things but make a big difference in T20 cricket,” Gambhir had said.
Growing injury list
In recent times, India have been hit by injuries. Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the two-match Test series after failing to recover from his knee injury sustained in the England ODI series. Uncapped Auqib Nabi replaced him.
Hardik Pandya, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Sai Sudharsan, Harshit Rana, and Washington Sundar are already sidelined due to fitness issues, putting the spotlight on team physiotherapist Kamlesh Jain. The team management is not happy with the growing list of injured players. According to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India will also discuss the breakdown of the first-choice players.
